New Media Enters the Mainstream According
to Arbitron/Edison Media Research Study
WHAT: Approximately 50 million Americans
have used Internet audio or video in the last month. Arbitron
Inc. (NYSE:ARB) and Edison Media Research executives will
present this and other findings from a new study—Internet
and Multimedia 11: New Media Enters the Mainstream—via webcast
on September 24. The study examines how new media usage—such
as satellite radio, personal video recorders and DVDs—has
become part of mainstream consumer habits.

Rosin will discuss how Internet Broadcasting consumption has
become a mainstream activity amongst consumers today. They
will also explore the consumer purchase behavior of "early
adopters," people who are among the first to buy or try new
products or services.
Other new findings from the study include:
- Online purchasing has nearly doubled in the
past three years;
- Nearly two-thirds (61 percent) of people
who tune to Internet audio and 59 percent of those who watch
Internet video prefer free programming supported by advertising
versus other business models;
- A quarter of those with Internet access at
home use software programs to block other forms of Internet
intrusions;
- Despite predictions of a plateau, the percentage
of Americans with Internet access in any location (home,
work, school, public library) increased to 80 percent.
- In addition, Mr. Rose and Mr. Rosin will
address the latest data on the impact of broadband/Internet
connections on media and consumer usage; awareness and usage
of satellite media; and the Internet as a motion picture
promotion vehicle and information resource.
